A Natural Chemical Found in Grape Seeds May Prevent Development or Progression of Alzheimer’s

Mount Sinai researchers found that polyphenols, a natural extract found in grapes, may help prevent or treat Alzheimer’s disease.
NEW YORK, NY – July 15, 2011 – Press Release
Researchers at Mount Sinai School of Medicine have found that grape seed polyphenols—a natural antioxidant—may help prevent the development or delay the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The research, led by Giulio Maria Pasinetti, MD, PhD, The Saunder Family Professor in Neurology {link to: http://www.mssm.edu/departments-and-institutes/neurology}, and Professor of Psychiatry and Geriatrics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, was published online in the current issue of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease. 25% Could Be Phony Fish!

With all the emphasis on the health benefits of fish in recent years, it’s disappointing to find that we’re in an era of phony fish. We have no idea what we’re eating.
The New York Times reports that researchers using gene sequencers to identify fish species have concluded that as much as 25% of all commercial fish products are incorrectly identified.
Put another way: it’s fraud.
Mahi-mahi can pass as yellowtail tuna, grouper can pass as catfish, and the Times calls tilapia “the Meryl Streep of seafood.” Apparently tilapia can be brilliantly passed off as all kinds of different fish.
The FDA has installed several gene sequencers in field labs to review fish samples. They’re expected to be up and running in a few months (like, in a year maybe?).
But the fish fraud problem won’t really be controlled until the technology catches up. Scientists predict the situation will change dramatically when hand-held sequencers are available to inspectors — probably within 10 years.
In the meantime, you can help ensure that the fish you’re eating is the actual variety of fish you ordered by purchasing fish from reputable sellers and reputable restaurants — especially those who deal in whole fish.
A fish is harder to pass off as something it’s not when it’s still whole -– from head to tailfin. But when it arrives already cut into steaks or filets, or otherwise packaged and prepared -– especially if it’s breaded or obscured by sauce -– it just might be tilapia putting on a Meryl-quality performance.
Better Than NSAIDS?
Summer time is here and many of us, our friends and Shaklee members are getting active in sports and other strenuous activities. Some of them may get injured, or develop an overuse syndrome.
The new Omega Guard is a wonderful alternative anti-inflammatory that we can all recommend with pride for pain relief.
I am enclosing a new article by my friend David Seaman, D.C. Please carefully note the statistics that he mentions … over 100,000 people a year end up in the hospital from internal bleeding caused by NSAIDS use, and 16,500 of those people will die from gastric hemorrhage.
NSAIDs are a class of "over the counter" drugs designed to reduce pain, fever, and inflammation, and include aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen products, marketed under a variety of names like Advil, Motrin or Aleve. These products interfere with the normal inflammation and repair cycle, which evolved to interrupt bacterial infections and for the management of tissue repair. Complications from even limited-use range from abdominal pain to significant damage to the linings of the digestive tract.
We can help with a natural approach to pain control, and save thousands of lives per year. I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did! Happy summer!
Alternatives to NSAID’s in the Treatment of Spinal Pain
by David Seaman, D.C., M.S., D.A.B.C.N., F.A.C.C.
The treatment of pain with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID?s) is big business in America, which leads to a substantial number of deaths and extraordinary costs to treat NSAID-complications. Consider the following facts about NSAID use:
More than 70 million NSAID prescriptions each year in US
More than 30 billion OTC NSAID?s sold each year in US
5-10% of US adult population routinely takes NSAID?s for pain control
14% of elderly US population routinely takes NSAID?s for pain control
NSAID-associated dyspepsia occurs in 50% of users
Almost all patients who take NSAID?s long term will demonstrate sub-epithelial gastric hemorrhage
About 8-20% of long term users will develop frank gut ulceration
About 3% will develop serious side-effects, which lead to 100,000 hospitalizations and an estimated 16,500 deaths
Annual cost to treat NSAID complications exceeds $1.5 billion annually
Natural biochemical treatments may be a way to curtail the damage caused by NSAID?s. A recent article published in Surgical Neurology examined the use of fish oil supplements in the treatment of patients with discogenic pain. (1) One of the authors is a neurosurgeon who evaluated some 250 patients, none of which turned out to be a surgical case; all were suffering from degenerative disc disease with facet arthropathy in the cervical and/or lumbar spine.
All patients were taking NSAID?s and 75% were on COX2 inhibitors. They were asked to take EPA/DHA from fish oil, at a dose of 2.4 grams for 2 weeks, and 1.2 grams thereafter. Questionnaires were sent to all patients and 125 were returned at an average of 75 days on fish oil supplements. Seventy-eight percent of patients were taking 1.2 grams, while 22% decided to continue with 2.4 grams/day.
A total of 59% of patients were able to discontinue the use of any NSAID?s; 60% reported their overall pain was less; 60% stated their joint pain was improved; 80% stated they were satisfied with their improvements; and, 88% stated they would continue taking fish oil. Only 2 patients reported side effects of any significance: loose bowel movements on 1.2 grams/day.
These positive results should not be surprising, as pharmacology texts tell us that EPA/DHA supplements approximate the potency of NSAID?s. (2)
The authors of this article mention additional natural anti-inflammatory agents, including turmeric, boswellia, bromelain, white willow bark, and green tea. Ginger is also a popular herb that is known to have anti-inflammatory properties.
Keep your nutritional approach simple and straightforward. For pain and inflammation, have you patients eat an anti-inflammatory diet as described in my previous articles in The American Chiropractor, and have them take a multi, plus magnesium, EPA/DHA, coenzyme Q10, ginger/turmeric and, if they have joint pain, glucosamine as well.
This approach is not typically contraindicated, save for those on anti-coagulants, such as Coumadin. Maroon and Bost indicated that patients taking aspirin are not at risk, if they take fish oil. (1)

Diabetes … Epidemic in North America
We are grateful to Martha Willmore for sharing with us this great information on diabetes and what we can do about it.
>>
Diabetes kills approximately 350,000 North Americans per year.
It is the third largest killer after heart disease and cancer.
Diabetes is the number one cause of blindness in North America
Two Types of Diabetes:
Type I – Juvenile diabetes representing 10% of diagnosed cases. Known causes include: damaged beta cells in pancreas caused by viral infections (flu, mumps, chicken pox, measles) environmental chemicals stress genetic (inherited)
Type II – Adult Onset diabetes, representing 90% of diagnosed cases. There are two types of Type II Diabetes:
a) Insulin Dependent – caused by not enough insulin being manufactured by the pancreas
b) Insulin Resistant – caused by — insulin receptors malfunctioning, OR — insulin receptors missing
To reduce the risk of developing Type II Diabetes, we must maintain good blood sugar levels, which is dependent on four things:
1) wise diet (including adequate fiber & avoidance of simple carbohydrates);
2) healthy pancreas;
3) healthy adrenal glands;
4) exercise
The PANCREAS makes INSULIN. Insulin is the “door-man” for the cell – it opens the door and allows glucose into the cell. In order to have a healthy pancreas, it is essential to consume adequate nutrients, especially protein, vitamin C, B vitamins, and zinc.
The “Insulin Receptor Sites” on the cell can be compared to “door-knobs.” Insulin resistant diabetics often have:
“Missing door-knobs,” which is usually due to lack of nutrients (minerals, B vitamins, and all of the amino acids) and a dirty liver. Therefore, Alfalfa, B Complex, Energizing or Instant Soy Protein, Liver DTX (milk thistle formula) is recommended;
OR …
“Door-knobs” covered with fat. Therefore, they are malfunctioning, and insulin cannot open the door to allow glucose in. Weight loss is essential to solve this situation.
DIABETICS TAKE WARNING! Insulin DOES NOT CURE diabetes! Insulin keeps you alive.
Due to more understanding of blood sugar, diabetics rarely die from elevated blood sugar levels now as they did in the past. However, instead, they have to contend with the LONG-TERM COMPLICATIONS of the DISEASE that will happen in 5 to 15 years unless steps are taken to prevent or reduce the complications.
Complications of Diabetes:
1. Heart Disease (narrowing of large arteries that supply the heart + increased risk of strokes + high cholesterol & triglycerides due to high sugar level in blood)
2. Peripheral Vascular Disease (poor circulation to the legs & feet leading to gangrene & amputations)
3. Retinopathy (narrowing & breakage of blood vessels in the eyes leading to blindness)
4. Neuropathy (tingling, burning, numbness, and pins and needles sensations, especially in legs and feet)
5. Kidney Problems (due to high sugar in urine) – kidney failure is the cause of death for many diabetics.
6. High Blood Pressure (due to narrowing of the blood vessels)
7. Infections (Diabetics are more prone to infections and often don’t heal well.)
How to reduce the Impact of Diabetes on Your Life!
1) Exercise (Removes glucose from the blood without insulin.)
2) Follow the Diabetics Diet Management principles. (See below.) This is ESSENTIAL!
3) Take supplements to reduce or prevent the complications, as well as help prevent disease.
4) Since obesity can affect insulin receptor sites, get weight under control.
5) Don’t smoke anything! (It causes constriction of arteries.)
SUGGESTED SUPPLEMENTS:
Glucose Regulation Complex is where to start. It helps the uptake of glucose into the cells by making the receptor sites work more efficiently.
1) Energizing or Instant Soy Protein – low fat protein source (essential for healthy insulin receptor sites)
2) Vita-Lea (vitamin & mineral smorgasbord)
3) Unflavored Fiber Plan or Fiber Plan Crunch or Daily Mix (slows down glucose absorption into blood)
4) OmegaGuard and Lecithin (helpful for neuropathy symptoms & reduces heart disease risk)
5) Vitamin E (improves circulation, helps reduce risk of clotting, reduces risk of retinopathy & neuropathy, and reduces oxidation–thereby, reducing LDL cholesterol)
6) B Complex (reduces neuropathy, reduces plaque formation in arteries, increases glucose utilization, and increases immunity)
7) Vitamin C (natural infection fighter, improves healing, and essential for health of eyes & kidneys)
8) Alfalfa, an excellent source of minerals (diabetics experience excess mineral loss due to frequent urination)
9) Zinc (essential for pancreas health and to increase the body’s immune function)
10) CarotoMax (for the eyes)
Diabetics Diet Management
Individuals who have followed these principles recommended by a medical doctor, have had GREAT SUCCESS in controlling their blood sugar level, and in some cases where the person was a Type II Adult Onset Diabetic on insulin, even the need for insulin was reduced to not needing either insulin by injection or by pill… IT WORKS!
Diabetics should have 10% grams of Carbohydrates to the number of Calories
For example: If the total calories of a meal are 450, then there needs to be 45.0 grams of carbohydrates
ESSENTIAL:
No white flour products (use 100% stone ground flour).
No white sugar (use stevia, fructose,or raw honey in moderation).
It is difficult to get the numbers in the 10% Ratio to match perfectly … The following “safe range” provides appropriate flexibility:
Example: 30 gms carbs to 300 calories
- start with the number of carbohydrates & multiple them times 1.5 (30×1.5=45)
- add and subtract 45 from 300 calories 300+45 = 345 / 300-45=255
- 255 to 345 is the “safe range” for 30 gms carbs
| Example of a Breakfast | Calories | Carbs | |
| Orange juice (1/2 cup) | 56 | 13.3 | |
| 2 pieces stone ground toast | 100 | 16.0 | |
| 2 teaspoons butter on toast | 35 | 0.0 | |
| Total: | 191 | 29.3 | POOR |
| ADD poached egg | 78 | .4 | |
| Total: | 269 | 29.7 | GOOD |
29.7 x1.5 = 44.5 (297=44.5=341.5 / 297-44.5=252.5) Safe Range = 252 to 341
There are several books available through bookstores that provide a breakdown of calories and carbohydrates (one is “Calories & Carbohydrates” by Barbara Kraus).
Complications will happen with ALL Diabetics (usually within 5 to 15 years) UNLESS YOU DO SOMETHING TO PREVENT THEM!
It is worth the investment in quality of life to make the Necessary changes?

Cancer Control. Rising to The Challenge.
By Sandra Bevacqua, PhD.
The body has the ability to eliminate cancer and heal itself.
You can help your body do this by following the regimen I have listed here …
A Little Bacteria May Be Good for You
According to the National Institutes of Health, respiratory infections
(such as the common cold) and gastrointestinal problems are two of the
leading causes of workplace absence.
How to Have a Healthy Heart
There have been many scientific studies demonstrating that Vitamin E
reduces heart disease risks by hundreds of percentage points. What was
has just been shown is that Vitamin E can also improve rheumatoid
arthritis symptoms and reduce the “markers” of inflammation!
Your Immune System and NutriFeron
This month we prepare for the onslaught of the spring allergy season.
Shaklee’s NutriFeron is a unique combination of 4 oriental herbal-preparations, which have a long history of use in reducing inflammation and promoting organ health.
Antioxidants and Ovarian Cancer
Here’s an excellent study supporting the use of antioxidants (Vitamin C
and E, beta-carotene and Co-Q 10) with chemotherapy. These authors
found that antioxidants improved the outcomes of chemotherapy, and
suggested no ill effects when combining the 2 treatments.
Drug/Herb Nutrient Reactions
In 2000 I discovered an excellent book called the "Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletion Handbook" by Ross Pelton. It was very helpful about defining which nutrients were depleted by a particular drug. Boy, what an eye opener that was!
